10 Great Places to Enjoy Maine Lobster in Portland

Though the pandemic is still very much a part of our everyday lives, there are more opportunities now to support restaurants and in turn the fishermen they buy from. A number of restaurants have opened in Portland over the past several months, with safe, socially distanced dining options.  We’ve listed a few of our favorites here if you’re lucky enough to get to visit Portland this summer or fall.  If your Maine trip has been postponed, or was never planned, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered too.  Lots of places in Maine will ship live lobster or lobster meat, or lobster roll making kits, or virtually anything lobster and culinary you could imagine.

1. DiMillo’s on the Water

25 Long Wharf, Portland, ME

This iconic Portland restaurant is situated on a boat, and is a Portland mainstay.  Serving up a wide array of dishes, including a number of classic Maine Lobster dishes, DiMillo’s has been family owned and operated since its inception in 1965.

2. Luke’s at Portland Pier

60 Portland Pier, Portland, ME

Luke’s offers takeout, delivery, and full-service outdoor dining directly on Portland’s working waterfront. Situated right beside our lobster buying station, the restaurant features 360-degree views of Portland Harbor and serves up a number of tasty lobster dishes, as well as craft cocktails, Maine beers and a variety of sustainably sourced seafood menu items.

3. Maine Lobster Shack

425 Fore Street, Portland, ME

A new kind of seaside shack on Portland’s Fore Street, specializing in all things lobster and also serving up fresh oysters and seafood daily. The Maine Lobster Shack serves up Vacationland one bite at a time. The Maine Lobster Shack works with the best distributors to ensure its seafood is always fresh, local and sustainably sourced.

4. The Lobster Shack at Two Lights

225 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME

One of Maine’s most iconic lobster shacks, The Lobster Shack is outside of Portland, so you get the added bonus of being able to explore beautiful Cape Elizabeth and its surroundings.  Currently you must order ahead for pick up, but the menu is expansive and includes not only Maine Lobster but fried clams and other fare as well, and the view is expansive.

5. High Roller Lobster Co

104 Exchange Street, Portland, ME

Originally a food truck, High Roller Lobster Co transitioned to brick and mortar in 2018 and has not looked back.  Serving up a wide array of lobster dishes as well as Maine beer, the menu is creative and fun (a “lobby pop”), but still offers the solid Maine Lobster classics as well.

6. Portland Lobster Company

180 Commercial Street, Portland, ME

This seasonal take out lobster shack is well known for serving up Maine-style lobster fare in a traditional shack out setting. Located on the waterfront on Portland’s bustling Commercial Street, and typically offering live music, the Portland Lobster Co is well worth a visit.

7. J’s Oysters

5 Portland Pier, Portland, ME

A Portland classic offering up a wide variety of seafood (not just oysters), this Portland mainstay is well worth a visit for a good, reasonably priced meal in a fun atmosphere.

8. Becky’s Diner

390 Commercial Street, Portland, ME

More likely than not, you’ll sit down next to a fisherman at Becky’s, which is family owned and operated and serves up classic American fare, including several traditional lobster dishes.  Becky’s opens at 4am in line with fishermen’s hours and is busy all day.  A trip to Portland would not be complete without visiting Becky’s.

9. Scales

Maine Wharf 68 Commercial Street, Portland, ME

If you’re looking for seafood at its finest in a more “up-scale” environment, Scales is the spot. Located right on the wharf, Scales is part of a group of restaurants and bakeries including Fore Street, Street and Co and Standard Baking that are all located in Portland. Menus change regularly to reflect seasonality and the chef’s creativity.

Located in the heart of Portland’s Old Port, Street & Co. is one of Portland’s oldest restaurants dedicated to bringing incredible, sustainably sourced top-notch seafood dishes to Mainers and tourists alike.
